SPOKANE, Wash. – Parasport Spokane has profoundly impacted numerous athletes and families throughout its existence, but now it’s the organization itself in need of support. Their current facility lease is set to expire this summer, prompting the search for a new home.
“We’re definitely an optimistic group and this has given us the opportunity to reach out to the community more than we already do,” said athlete and current Parasport Spokane Coach Chelsea McClammer.
For the past seven years, the nonprofit has operated out of a local Spokane Valley school. However, the lease won’t be renewed, and the school requires the space back due to continued growth.
Parasport Spokane caters to a wide range of ages, from toddlers to adults aged 11 months to 74, providing coaching, recreational, and competitive opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities.
“We’re a community organization that Utilizes Sport as a Catalyst for Life, and we’re making a monumental impact in the lives of persons with physical disabilities of all ages, their families, and those who know them,” said Parasport’s David Greig.
Despite the challenges ahead, the community spirit remains strong. “Definitely the community, they are my friends, they are my family,” said McClammer.
Now, as the countdown to find a new space continues, the organization’s volunteers and members are feeling the pressure. “It took our breath away a little bit…this is a big year for us,” said Greig. “We need a space where we can play wheelchair basketball, we’ll have 50 people come in on a Saturday.”
With programs operating seven days a week, Parasport Spokane urgently seeks a new facility that can accommodate their diverse needs, from gym space for wheelchair basketball to office facilities.
