SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane County deputies arrested a suspect who reportedly stole over $30,000 from her employer during the five years she worked there.

On Nov. 9, 2023, a business owner reported that an assistant manager was caught stealing cash from the company. The owner’s called law enforcement when they saw a deposit slip indicating a discrepancy of $400 in cash.

He knew that was incorrect because he specifically remembered the occasion where the customer paid with five $100 bills.

The employee was identified as 37-year-old Ashley A. Taylor who admitted to stealing the $1000 and confessed to additional thefts.

The owner of the business began going through documents when Taylor handed him what appeared to be a handwritten confession letter. Taylor was immediately fired at that time.

A check of invoices, bank transactions and bookkeeping records were compared and analyzed from April 2019, when Taylor was hired, through the date of the theft discovery. The analysis indicated Taylor had stolen over $30,000 from the business during her employment.

SCIU Detectives reviewed the financial records, and on January 10, Taylor was interviewed. During the conversation with detectives, Taylor admitted to stealing money from the business “quite often” and said it became “a habit.”

After the interview, Taylor was arrested for theft and was booked into Spokane County Jail. As detectives arrived with Taylor, the jail was on “red light” status meaning that there could be no new arrests or bookings.

During a 3-4 hour way, detectives did not know when she would be booked, so they released her with “the intention of requesting a summons for arrest.”

On Jan. 31, arrangements were made for Taylor to meet with detectives at the jail. She arrived and was then booked into jail.
