Woman dead after driving drunk on State Route 291 near Suncrest

SUNCREST, Wash. — One person is dead after a one-car crash two miles north of Tumtum.

According to WSP, 55-year-old Barbara Jones from Marshalltown, Iowa, was drunk driving at high speed northbound on State Route 291. She overcorrected, driving into the southbound lanes and went off the road. Jones was not wearing her seatbelt and was thrown out of her car.

WSP arrived at the scene around 7:45 p.m. on May 25 and cleared the scene later that night.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) is at the scene of a fatal one-car crash near Suncrest.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, State Route 291 reopened late last night.

UPDATE AT 7:30 A.M. May 26

According to WSP, the crash occurred two miles north of Suncrest on State Route 291 near milepost 24 around 7:45 p.m. on May 25. The road is completely blocked as WSP and Stevens County Sheriff’s Office investigate the incident.

At this time, there are no detours in place and no estimated time on when the road will reopen again. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
