Woman killed in Spokane Valley hit-and-run dies in hospital

SPOKANE, Wash.- A woman who was struck in a Jan. 24 hit-and-run has died in the hospital according to the Spokane Valley Traffic Unit.

The woman, who has not been publicly identified, was walking down Broadway in the Valley when she was allegedly struck by John Townshend, a man previously wanted for theft.

After Townshend hit the woman with his car he claimed that he attempted to locate her, but thought that she had fled. He characterized the collision as a graze when questioned by police.

He was arrested on Jan. 29 for an unrelated theft warrant and charged with causing an injury during a hit-and-run. He is currently in Spokane County jail.

Following the death of the woman Townshend allegedly hit, his hit-and-run charge was changed to include causing a death.
