WSU master gardener share tips on lawn care as summer approaches

SPOKANE, Wash. – As the weather gets warmer, more people start to dust off their mowers and yard tools. But before you do, WSU master gardeners gave tips about the things you should and should not be doing this time of year.

DO: Make sure to take the bag off of your lawn mower so the mulch can fertilize your grass.

DON’T: Walk on wet grass as it could reshape and possibly damage your lawn.

DO: Water your lawn in the morning, rather than in the heat of the day. If you wait until it’s hot out, the water could evaporate, and the process becomes more expensive for you.

DON’T: Overfertilize your yard as the chemicals are really bad for local irrigation systems.

DO: Add compost to your lawn as it works as a great natural fertilizer.

DON’T: Mow too low because if you cut your grass too short, it could die. Let it breathe and be healthy.

DO: Aerate your lawn. Just like you and me, your lawn needs to breathe. You can call a landscaper or rent the equipment if you need.

DON’T: Forget to clean your aerating machine. If someone just used it on an unhealthy lawn and you use it on your lawn without cleaning it, you could transfer the bad stuff to your lawn.

DO: Check your sprinkler system before turning it on for the year. Sometimes their memories are not like ours; they may have forgotten what time to turn off.

DON’T: Use chemicals on weeds if you can avoid it. It’s better for the environment if you pick them by hand.
