SPOKANE, Wash. – It’s Earth Day and WSU Master Gardeners are looking for community gardens where they can install free compost bins.
This coming after WSU Master Gardeners received a grant last year from the Department of Ecology to build these compost bins in an effort to reduce the amount of organic matter going into our solid waste system.
Instead of putting it into the garbage they want you to put it in here, where it can be a part of nature’s recycling.
They have already installed 15 bins across the region, and they are hoping to build a total of 54 by the end of 2025.
Tim Kohlhauff with WSU Master Gardeners says composting makes a difference.
“Instead of having it go to garbage we’re turning it into something valuable for community gardens,” said Kohlhauff. “It’s going to help them grow more food, we’re going to reduce the waste that goes out to landfills or to the incinerator. And overall, I think it’s a win for everybody.”
